You are what you eat..........

I don't even want to know what I am if that's true.  For the past several years we have back slid from healthy living like an alcoholic locked in a brewery.  The first step we decided to take on our path to total self-sufficiency is to repair our bodies through our diet.  What better place to start than the first (and most important) meal of the day.  So, that was the first major change I made to our health.  I started insisting that everyone eat a healthy breakfast. I am even going to start making my own cereals for this really soon.  *hahahahaha*

We have been content using store bought organic cereals mixed with fresh breakfast staples up until now, and even still using processed foods, the increased overall health of my family is substantial! But, if you knew what cereal went through to make it to your store shelf, you might never have cereal again.  Especially when you learn that touted healthy brands like Kashi are loaded with GMO's, you lose a lot of faith in the good of you cereal market.  But baby steps means just that, BABY STEPS!  Make the healthiest choices you can, and then wean yourself off of store bought to home made.  That's our goal.  Saving the world (or at least our health) one box of cereal at a time!

Now, If you are not a big breakfast eater (I prefer brunch...) try doing an am graze (feel like livestock yet?). I munch dry cereal with my morning tea while the girls eat breakfast.  Then I grab an apple with pb when I get home from running them to school and a little later I down some yogurt. Or I eat a hard boiled egg with some veggies instead of the apple and PB. Or.... or.... or....  The options are endless!!!!!!  The idea is to eat something with vitamins and nutrition.  Do for your body with food what sleep does for your brain.  Fill it up, give it energy, and let it repair itself.

On the weekends we have big hearty happy breakfasts that require diligent amounts of effort to yield the scrumptious rewards (ok, at least more effort than cereal or, say, candy). Things like omelets, french toast, whole grain pancakes/waffles often made with various fruit/veggie purees, or my kiddos favorites - Healthy fat Muffins and yogurt smoothies fill our weekends with such abundant morning goodness. We even have special "smart" breakfasts that they eat during Standardized Testing to boost their brain power. Granted this is mostly a placebo effect (mostly), in much the same way Dumbo's feather helped him to fly, but don't tell my kids.... All they need is to believe it works and it will. Besides, they are getting a good healthy filling nutrient loaded breakfast and THAT my friends, really will make a difference, test day & everyday!

So, today's baby step is to start eating healthy breakfasts.  Today I had fruit salad with milk and a whole wheat english muffin with cinnamon pb.  And tea with honey.  I drink tea every morning, it has essentially replaced coffee at our house.  I bought the english muffins (I really need to start baking again) at the local supermarket and used fresh fruit from the produce department.  The fruit (berries and apples and nanas... oh my!) all sliced up and then eaten with yummy voracity is my fruit serving.  Organic pb from the same store mixed with 1 tsp of cinnamon and 2 tsp of honey just before I put it on my English muffin took care of whole grains and protein.  Milk from the carton?  Dairy is done.  Some days (most Days), it's not so well rounded.  But right now, I'm just trying to train my body to accept food before noon and have enough energy to be the best dang frugal living, healthy eating, enviroment saving, chemical ridding, dirt playing, silly dancing mommy I can be.

If I have to define myself by what I eat...  I hope that someday soon I can be pure unadulterated goodness!

Here is a bunch of random factoids about breakfast.  Some stuff I bet you never knew.....

What steps are you going to take to feed yourself and your family breakfast everyday?  What's your ideas for tomorrow?

I hope you find at least a little bit of happy today!
